Milkweeds for Monarchs Planted at Central Park
posted on 8/31/23

With the help of Monticello 5th grade students and staff Jones County Conservation Staff were able to plant 128 common and butterfly milkweed plugs within several prairie restoration plantings at Central Park. These milkweed plugs were funded through a grant from Monarch Watch for monarch habitat restoration projects across the nation.
Although it has been a tough year for new plantings due to the drought conditions many of the new milkweed plants survived. Some even flowered and provided vital monarch larval food for hungry monarch caterpillars. We look forward to seeing these plantings thrive in coming years providing generations of monarchs with much needed habitat.
